When the resources of the university join forces with the resources of the community, great things can happen.

GPL Read campaignI had the pleasure of listening to Karen Farbridge, Mayor of the City of Guelph give the opening welcome remarks at the “Building a Research Shop: A Community-Campus Dialogue.” Someone just sent me the transcript of those remarks. In her words, “Any city that has a university in its midst is a lucky one indeed. And Guelph is no exception.

We tend to think first of the economic and social benefits the university provides: high quality jobs, contributions to arts and culture, and access to innovation and talent.

But there is a significant opportunity for the university to contribute its research capacity to help address community issues.”

Her comments were wonderful way to start the day.
